GPT-4 is the soon-to-be-released version of the hottest language we’ve seen in a decade.

Artificial intelligence has made remarkable strides in the past decade, and language models such as OpenAI’s GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) have played a significant role in the advancements. GPT-3, released in June 2020, stunned the world with its ability to generate coherent and natural-sounding language.

The current version is GPT-3.5, and the hype went into overdrive when OpenAI released ChatGPT – their own chatbot program running on GPT-3.5. When people saw what could be done with the language, the hype literally exploded.

It has led to debates about the future of journalism and writing. Google called a “code red” meeting to discuss how it will affect the search engine. Discussions popped up about how students would use it to write their homework and other tasks.

However, as with any technology, there is always room for improvement. Let’s discuss the much-anticipated release of GPT-4, when it is expected to arrive, and the improvements we can expect over GPT-3.5.

When is GPT-4 Expected to be Released?

OpenAI has not made any official announcement regarding the release date of GPT-4, but it is rumored to be coming out the week of March 12, 2023 (UPDATE – It was released on March 14, 2023!). Additionally, OpenAI has been relatively quiet regarding any new projects or developments, which suggests that the company is focusing on enhancing the capabilities of its existing models.

With the rapid advancements in AI and the increasing demand for language models, many developers (myself included) are anxiously awaiting this next iteration of its groundbreaking technology.

Significant Improvements Over GPT-3.5

Multiple Modalities

Microsoft Bing has aggressively been integrating with GPT-4 (Microsoft recently purchased 49% of OpenAI in January 2023). Bing has lagged far behind Google when it comes to search, but this aggressive integration has many wondering how Google is going to counter the move.

Microsoft recently discussed how their integration with GPT-4 allows multiple modalities (input types) that can be accepted. You can use text, video, images, and speech as inputs. GPT-3 only allowed text as an input.

This would seem to mean that a result could include a video created entirely by GPT-4. Microsoft also seemed to indicate that sound would be in the video as well.

Microsoft is having a big announcement on March 16, where the new announcement is expected.

Increased Parameters

A parameter is a value or set of values that determine the behavior of a model during training. Parameters map input data to output data. The process of training a machine learning model involves finding the optimal values for its parameters that minimize the difference between the predicted output and the actual output.

In short, the more parameters that are mapped, the more robust and “smarter” the program will be.

GPT-3 has 175 billion machine learning parameters.

ChatGPT uses a smaller version of GPT-3 and only has 774 million parameters.

GPT-4 is rumored to have 170 trillion parameters.

We should see significant improvement of GPT-4 is the writing of programming code in multiple languages. This can truly revolutionize software development (not to mention the takeover of the machines).

The programming I’ve seen created by ChatGPT has been decent. Improvements in GPT-4 are only going to make things better.
