GPT-4: The Next Generation of Language AI

OpenAI GPT-4

GPT-4 is the soon-to-be-released version of the hottest language we’ve seen in a decade.

Artificial intelligence has made remarkable strides in the past decade, and language models such as OpenAI’s GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) have played a significant role in the advancements. GPT-3, released in June 2020, stunned the world with its ability to generate coherent and natural-sounding language.

The current version is GPT-3.5, and the hype went into overdrive when OpenAI released ChatGPT – their own chatbot program running on GPT-3.5. When people saw what could be done with the language, the hype literally exploded.

It has led to debates about the future of journalism and writing. Google called a “code red” meeting to discuss how it will affect the search engine. Discussions popped up about how students would use it to write their homework and other tasks.

However, as with any technology, there is always room for improvement. Let’s discuss the much-anticipated release of GPT-4, when it is expected to arrive, and the improvements we can expect over GPT-3.5.

When is GPT-4 Expected to be Released?

GPT-4 is Coming Soon

OpenAI has not made any official announcement regarding the release date of GPT-4, but it is rumored to be coming out the week of March 12, 2023 (UPDATE – It was released on March 14, 2023!). Additionally, OpenAI has been relatively quiet regarding any new projects or developments, which suggests that the company is focusing on enhancing the capabilities of its existing models.

With the rapid advancements in AI and the increasing demand for language models, many developers (myself included) are anxiously awaiting this next iteration of its groundbreaking technology.

Significant Improvements Over GPT-3.5

GPT-4 - adapt or fail

GPT-3 is undoubtedly a powerful language model, but it is not without its limitations. The model’s training data is limited to the internet, and it relies heavily on the context of the surrounding text to generate coherent responses. This limitation can result in errors and inconsistencies in the generated output, especially when the input is ambiguous or contextually complex.

Here are some potential improvements that we can expect from GPT-4 over its predecessor:

Multiple Modalities

Microsoft Bing has aggressively been integrating with GPT-4 (Microsoft recently purchased 49% of OpenAI in January 2023). Bing has lagged far behind Google when it comes to search, but this aggressive integration has many wondering how Google is going to counter the move.

Microsoft recently discussed how their integration with GPT-4 allows multiple modalities (input types) that can be accepted. You can use text, video, images, and speech as inputs. GPT-3 only allowed text as an input.

This would seem to mean that a result could include a video created entirely by GPT-4. Microsoft also seemed to indicate that sound would be in the video as well.

Microsoft is having a big announcement on March 16, where the new announcement is expected.

Increased Parameters

GPT-4 - increased parameters like rubber ducks

A parameter is a value or set of values that determine the behavior of a model during training. Parameters map input data to output data. The process of training a machine learning model involves finding the optimal values for its parameters that minimize the difference between the predicted output and the actual output.

In short, the more parameters that are mapped, the more robust and “smarter” the program will be.

GPT-3 has 175 billion machine learning parameters.

ChatGPT uses a smaller version of GPT-3 and only has 774 million parameters.

GPT-4 is rumored to have 170 trillion parameters.

Enhanced Training Data

One of the significant limitations of GPT-3 is its reliance on the internet as the primary source of training data. The internet is not always reliable, and the quality of the data can vary widely. GPT-4 is expected to have access to a much larger and more diverse dataset, which will enable it to generate more accurate and contextually appropriate responses.

Improved Contextual Understanding

GPT-4 is expected to have an enhanced understanding of context and be able to generate more accurate responses based on the input provided. This improvement will be achieved through the use of advanced machine learning techniques such as reinforcement learning, which will enable the model to learn from its mistakes and improve its performance over time.

Enhanced Multilingual Capabilities

GPT-3 has limited multilingual capabilities, with most of its training data being in English. GPT-4 is expected to have improved multilingual capabilities and be able to generate coherent responses in multiple languages.

You can have inputs in one language, and receive outputs in a different language if you prefer. GPT-3 is mostly confined to English.

Better Writing of Programming Code

One awesome part of GPT-3 is how you can ask it to write a program in JavaScript and it creates it for you. We should see significant improvement of GPT-4 is the writing of programming code in multiple languages. This can truly revolutionize software development (not to mention the takeover of the machines).

The programming languages that it can now write code in are:

  • Python
  • Java
  • C++
  • JavaScript
  • Ruby
  • PHP
  • Swift
  • Go
  • Kotlin
  • Perl
  • Lua
  • R

The programming I’ve seen created by ChatGPT has been decent. Improvements in GPT-4 are only going to make things better.

Enhanced Common Sense Reasoning

Common Sense is Not That Common

One of the significant limitations of GPT-3 is its lack of common sense reasoning. The model can generate coherent responses based on the input provided, but it lacks the ability to reason based on common knowledge or real-world experience.

GPT-4 should have improved common sense reasoning capabilities, which will enable it to generate more accurate and contextually appropriate responses.

Improved Accuracy and Efficiency

Finally, GPT-4 is expected to be more accurate and efficient than its predecessors. The model will achieve this improvement through the use of advanced hardware and software optimization techniques, which will enable it to process larger amounts of data and generate more accurate responses in less time.

The release of GPT-4 is highly anticipated, and it is expected to improve upon the already impressive capabilities of GPT-3.5. With improved training data, multiple modalities, enhanced contextual understanding, multilingual capabilities, better fine-tuning, improved common sense reasoning, and enhanced accuracy and efficiency, GPT-4 is poised to revolutionize the field of natural language processing and have a significant impact on a wide range of industries.

The potential applications of GPT-4 are endless, and it will be exciting to see how the technology is adopted and integrated into various industries in the coming years.
